About the union

The Toronto Cyclists Union provides a strong, unified voice for Toronto cyclists.

We are a membership-based organization bringing together cyclists from all across Toronto. Cyclists like you: Join us to help strengthen our collective voice. Our work is almost entirely funded through membership contributions.

We work together with citizens, community groups, bike shops and the City towards the common goals of ensuring that cycling is a legitimate, accessible, and safe means of transportation.

The city has an excellent bike plan, yet the pace at which it has been rolled out is unnacceptable. The chain fell off, and we sense a shift in gears. We want to help.

The Toronto Cyclists Union has a set of position statements.

What’s in a name?
Defending the 'Union'...

On a few occasions, we’ve heard concerns expressed about the name of our organisation. People are worried that the word “union” may have negative connotations for some people.

A few responses:

• The word “union” is partly defined as “an alliance or confederation of people for mutual interest or benefit”. That’s exactly what we are. Why pretend otherwise?
• The word ‘union’ is frequently used in many contexts that don’t invoke images of pickets lines or militancy. People don’t think of labour struggle when they visit Union Station, or a credit union, or the Union Bar, or Union Yoga Studio. And U.S. Presidents give a little speech called “State of the Union”
• Besides, we like unions. We also like weekends, vacations, benefits, minimum wage and lots of other nice things that unions have fought for.
• Lastly, it’s too late to change it. We’ve already printed business cards  ;)
