Ward 32: Beaches-East York

You need to join a ward group to see all the updates. You can still see all public ward updates and events.

Welcome to the Ward 32 page!

Our Goal - To promote cycling in the ward. This is both through community events to assist cyclists and increase the public's exposure to cyclists, but also at the political level to advocate for better cycling infrastructure, making cycling safer both for the well-being of present cyclists, and to encourage more people to cycle.

History - We have been active since the very start of the Toronto Cyclists Union in 2008 with Doug Lee and Rob Wallis as the Ward Captains. We soon developed a core group of 5 or 6 people who met once a month in MacCarthy's pub. Since 2010 our numbers have grown significantly, and we have moved our meetings to The Feathers on Kingston Road.

People - Your two ward Captains are Robert Wallis and Mary Ann Neary. We are also fortunate that our local councillor is very supportive of cycling, and either attends our meetings or sends a representative. At present we have over 25 cyclists on our email list. Most members of the group are also involved with other cycling groups and some volunteer at TCU activities, attend city-wide TCU meetings, and keep an ear to the ground on political issues that affect Toronto cyclists.

What we do - Our group meets once a month usually in The Feathers (Kingston Road), to bounce ideas to meet the needs/wants of cyclists in our ward. We run events at the East Lynn Farmer's Market, the Ward 32 Environment Day, the Ward 32 Green Fair, facilitate a Bike Valet at the Beaches Jazz and Blues festivals, and others.  Future events may include a biking treasure hunt, a biking ‘ward tour’, CAN-BIKE courses and school events. We are also working with our local councillor to implement our 'wish-list' of realistic cycling infrastructure (see 'Ward 32 Cycling Infrastructure: Proposed Improvement Plan' below).

Ward 32 Cycling Infrastructure: Proposed Improvement Plan - Key issues in this ward are;

1. Dixon to Lockwood contra-flow bike lane

2. Signed bike route Edgewood to Eastwood to Bowmore

3. Lee Avenue curb cut

4. Bike lane on Kippendavie (contra-flow) and Elmer

5. Signed bike route on Sarah Ashbridge and Lockwood Avenue

6. Bike lane on Gerrard East from Main to Victoria Park

If you don't agree with these, or you would like to help with their implementation, then get involved!

If you are interested in helping advocate for cycling at any level in our ward, have any ideas for events, or just want to meet up with other cyclists within the ward socially, please also email ward32@bikeunion.to .

2011-07-22 Update: There will be no bike valet on Friday, July 22nd at Kew Gardens. Bike valet on July 23 and 24th operates during The Kew Gardens performances from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

For the first time, the Beaches International Jazz Festival (BIJF) has valet parking!

The festival runs July 15th - July 24th. If you have been to the festival before, you know parking gets tight. However, cyclists need not worry. For the first time the festival will have a Bike Valet, running during both festival weekends, coordinated by the Ward 32 Toronto Cyclist Union group "32 Spokes".

The bicycle valet will operate similar to a coat check, you give us your bike and we'll give you a ticket. Only TCU volunteers will be allowed in the enclosed valet area. Cyclists can drop off their bikes with us July 15th - 17th at Woodbine Park and July 23rd - 24th at KEW Gardens. Bicycles must be picked up by the end of each festival day, within 15 minutes of the last concert ending and require that you have the ticket for your bike.

Come on out and enjoy the Beaches Jazz festival on the weekends, let us worry about your bike, and dance if you want to.
