About the bike union

The Toronto Cyclists Union, founded in 2008, provides a strong, unified voice for Toronto cyclists. We are a membership-based organization bringing together cyclists from all across Toronto.

Vision

  • We imagine a city that treats cycling as an important part of its transportation network.
  • We imagine a city that respects cyclists and encourages more people to ride their bikes.
  • We imagine safe, accessible cycling routes throughout the city including designated bicycle lanes that are properly enforced and maintained.
  • We imagine infrastructure that support cyclists needs including ample bicycle parking, clear markings and appropriate signage.
  • We imagine a vibrant, inclusive and influential cycling community with a major voice in all municipal and budgetary decision-making processes.
  • We imagine a city where cycling flourishes
  • And we imagine a cleaner, healthier, safer and more livable streetscape for all Torontonians.

The Toronto Cyclists Union will work toward making this vision a reality today.

Our Purpose

The Toronto Cyclists Union strives to be a strong, unified voice advocating for the rights of cyclists of all ages and from all parts of the city. We aim to shift the political culture that has resisted the changes that are needed.

Toronto can become a leading urban centre where sustainable modes of transportation are not only accepted but actively promoted. Every day, thousands of cyclists in Toronto ride their bicycles yet they face many obstacles that could be removed with little more than political willpower. Our politicians pay tributes to cycling but often shrink away from opportunities for real change that could benefit not only cyclists, but everyone who lives in Toronto. Planners are constrained by a system that treats the car as king. Traffic laws are not inclusive and needlessly create tension between motorists and cyclists. As a result, cycling has been marginalized and rarely seen as a legitimate means of transportation.

Our Mission

The Toronto Cyclists Union is a member-driven community of cyclists from every geographic area in Toronto that represents a cross-section of Toronto’s cyclists. We provide a vibrant and amplified voice to achieve the common goals of safety, legitimacy and accessibility of cycling in Toronto. We coordinate city-wide advocacy on behalf of our members and provide resources for cyclists to be effective local advocates themselves. We promote cycling in an inclusive, friendly and inviting manner.
