Bicycle Service Station
The Toronto Cyclists Union’s Bicycle Service Station is a chance to bring bike advocacy to the street and make the bike union more accessible to Toronto's cycling community, while providing them access to free safety checks and basic repair work.
The Bicycle Service Station gives back to Toronto's cycling community, increases the visibility of the Toronto Cyclists Union and partners, and grows our membership.
The station rotates throughout various high bike traffic areas across the city, is highly visible, and shares important information with Toronto’s cyclists, and passersby. Dates, times, locations and partners are scheduled month to month as we figure out the best spots for this year. If you're interested in participating in the project, or in brining the BSS to your community, write Jared Kolb at jared.kolb@bikeunion.to
The service station is presented in collaboration with local bike shops, and other cycling groups focused on service delivery such as BikeSauce, Bicycle Commons and Evergreen Bike Works who contribute bike mechanic services/equipment. In addition to raising awareness about the advocacy work, campaigns, and membership benefits of the Toronto Cyclists Union, we educate Toronto cyclists about their rights and shared responsibilities via the direct distribution of our Toronto Cyclists Handbook – now available in the top 17 languages spoken in Toronto.
Through the direct, on-street nature of the campaign, we build public awareness and support for the advancement of our cycling integration objectives by engaging fellow cyclists/non-cyclists in discussion about the issues, and encouraging their involvement through membership and volunteering. The program is already established as a successful and replicable outreach and engagement model in San Francisco – we are the first to model it in Canada.
We are confident that by getting out into the street and talking with our city’s cyclists in various locations across Toronto we are raising not only our profile and membership numbers, but also advance the cycling advocacy movement that is now well underway.
