Bike Winter 2012

Our Bike Winter program aims to celebrate and promote winter cycling.

It’s easy to stay in the saddle year round! Our Bike Winter program aims to celebrate and promote winter cycling.Especially with the camaraderie of other riders and a fun winter cycling event, there’s no reason to put your bike in the basement when winter hits. Whether you are looking for advice on keeping your extremities warm, or something to do on a blustery Thursday night, Bike Winter 2012 can help you enjoy your bike as an all weather option to get around the City.

To the uninitiated, winter cycling may seem as ill-advised as skating on thin ice! However, during most winter days, the main obstacles are not snow and ice, but rather cold temperatures and wind. On these days, if you dress well and have the right amount of determination, you can bike while feeling comfortable and warm. During a typical Toronto winter day, blizzards or ice storms are the exception, not the rule. Most cyclists legitimately avoid travel during these extreme conditions. Though on any other winter day year-round cyclists find that they can enjoy and use their bikes!

Our Bike Winter 2012 program aims to celebrate winter cycling and encourage those who want to give it a try. We’re doing this by:

  1. Providing winter riding and gear tips!

  2. Organizing the Coldest Day of the Year Ride, a comfortable, car-free, group ride to celebrate and promote winter cycling. Cyclists will ride down University Avenue from City Hall to Front Street, with free hot chocolate provided at the end courtesy of the Fairmont Royal York!

  3. BIXI Special
Have you already stored your bike for the winter? No problem! BIXI members will get free extra usage time. Details at toronto.bixi.com. Not a BIXI member? We have limited reservations to test a BIXI bike for free on this ride. E-mail info@bikeunion.to to reserve yours by January 27th, 2012!

  4. Hosting 365 Days of Cycling, a photo exhibit showcasing cycling throughout the four seasons. Arrive on your bike and we’ll enter you into a special door prize raffle!
