Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC)
This BUG began in 1985, when the store opened in Toronto. MEC is a not-for-profit co-operative retail store promoting self propelled wilderness activities. MEC works with community groups like the Community Bicycling Network's Bikeshare and Women with Wrenches, The West Toronto Railpath, as well as the City's Cycling Ambassadors and Canbike, to promote cycling. Members participate in group time trial rides, 24 hour adrenaline races, run bicycle workshops at the store during Bike Week. MEC hosts a Bikshare (www.bikeshare.org) hub, and have a lock loaner program for members without a lock. The store itself has a monitored bicycle lock up room for staff and a repair shop, a casual dress code, showers and lockers, and discounts for staff on cycling products.
