BikeCamp eh, what the heck is that?
It's essentially a series of simultaneous participant led/generated workshops - all related to various aspects of cycling, and the politics of cycling advocacy. BikeCamp is an opportunity for bike union members, would be members, and the wider cycling advocacy community, to come together and jam on a variety of ideas, campaigns, events. The possibilities are endless, so if you are an avid cyclist with an interest in helping continue to grow and shape the momentum of this community, this event is not to be missed.
Proposed Schedule:
10am Registration
10:30 Keynotes: Daniel Egan, City of Toronto & Dave Meslin, Founder, Toronto Cyclists Union
11:00 Opening circle instructions and session proposals - Facilitated by Daniel Rose.
11:45 Lunch/discussion
12:30 1st session - Dotmocracy sheets to be completed in last 5 minutes
1:30 2nd session - Dotmocracy sheets to be completed in last 5 minutes
2:30 Break (facilitators put up dotmocracy sheets for review)
2:45 Reconvene in circle for directions - Dotmocracy exercise underway
3:30 Assess Dotmocracy feedback - Propose action sessions - Facilitated by, Jason Diceman
4:00 Action sessions: timeline, initial actions, assigned responsibilities - contact list.
4:45 Closing circle and report back
5:15 Teardown and beers!!!
Examples of workshop session topic: The upcoming municipal election and our need to be ready with an action plan overall, but particularly to counter the war on cars rhetoric / wedge issue. Campaign ideas for the bike union to pursue in the coming months/years. Broader long and short term goals of the cycling community. Changes to the Ont. Driver's Handbook. Complete Streets and what an Ontario policy might look like. Bikes and Fashion. The integration of E-bikes, etc... Anything bike related is up for discussion/debate/action!
The goals for the bike union are to come away with some good campaign ideas that have been generated by the community, to give folks a chance to collaborate and jam with other interested bikesters on various subjects, and to give folks a chance to get involved & motivated to step up and take part in actually running with and even leading some of the campaigns that come out of this event. It's amazing how much can be accomplished when we put our heads together and make a plan ;)
