Action Alert: Public Bike Share System in Jeopardy!

Submitted by yvonne on 18 February, 2010 - 14:10

Fellow Cyclists,

** The fate of Toronto's Public Bike Share System is now uncertain.**

Bike Share demo in TO - '08Bike Share demo in TO - '08Some of you may have heard that City transportation & cycling staff have been working towards the implementation of a 300 stations/3000 bikes public bike share system in the summer of 2010 - to be delivered by the 'Bixi' bike share folks from Montreal.

This system would dramatically improve our city, allow more people to choose cycling as an option, and catalyze the long awaited bike infrastructure we've been requesting.  For a variety of reasons, there is now some serious concern about the fate of this program.

Your 5-minute Call to Action: Email your friendly support for a Public Bike Share system in Toronto to your Councillor, and the following recipients.

"Joe Pennachetti – City Manager" <jpennac@toronto.ca>, "Mayor David Miller" <mayor_miller@toronto.ca>, "Councillor Adrian Heaps" <councillor_heaps@toronto.ca>, "Gary Welsh" <welsh@toronto.ca>, "Daniel Egan" <degan@toronto.ca>, "Councillor Adam Giambrone" <councillor_giambrone@toronto.ca>, "Councillor Gord Perks" <councillor_perks@toronto.ca>, "Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone"          <councillor_pantalone@toronto.ca>, "Councillor Joe Mihevc" <councillor_mihevc@toronto.ca>,  "Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker" <councillor_debaeremaeker@toronto.ca>, "Councillor Pam McConnell" <councillor_mcconnell@toronto.ca>, "Councillor Adam Vaughan" <councillor_vaughan@toronto.ca>, "Brendan Agnew-Iller" <biler@toronto.ca>.

More details about recent news on this issue, along with some suggestions for email content can be found on the following sites:

Please Note:  I highly recommend personalizing your email and including some of your own thoughts on the issue - 500 unique and supportive emails are all the more powerful than 500 cookie cutter letters.

Thanks for taking the time to take action and show your support for this important green transportation initiative.

If Montreal, Paris, Washington, London (this summer), Brussels, Milan, Stockholm, Chile, Barcelona, and others can do it - so can Toronto!

Cheers,
Yvonne & the bike union team
