The Partnership for Integration and Sustainable Transportation

The Partnership for Integration and Sustainable Transportation is a joint initiative of CultureLink Settlement Services and the Toronto Cyclists Union. Our goal is to promote the integration of newcomers in the Greater Toronto Area, by fostering cycling transportation as an affordable, healthy and convenient option. We encourage newcomers to engage in cycling advocacy and to get involved in the political systems affecting people in our city. Our work is guided by values of sustainability, empowerment, equity, inclusion, health, social justice, and cultural competence.

The Toronto Cyclists Handbook is a manual for riding a bike safely and comfortable in Toronto. It is avaialble in 16 bilingual editions: English and Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (simplified), English, French, Hindi, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil Urdu and Vietnamese! We have also published beautiful bilingual posters promoting cycling in 15 languages, and produced short videos in English and Portuguese.

We regularly host workshops about fun and safe cycling in Toronto, at libraries, community centres and schools around Toronto. In 2011 we introduced a new program called "Bike Host" to match newcomers who bike, with mentors who are cyclists. Through Bike Host, newcomers become "Multilingual Cycling Ambassadors" who gain Canadian experience and can practice their language skills. Together, mentors and mentees contribute to building our cycling community. Find out more here.

Learn more about our work by watching our video, "Diverse Bicycle City", produced by Darren Sustar and decoderdm.ca.

Contact us for copies of handbooks and posters, or to find out about upcoming workshops, events and volunteer opportunities.
