City Hall wants to take away the Jarvis Street bike lanes.

We can change this.

1,000 cyclists on Jarvis Street depend on those lanes for safety. There is simply no justification for removing these lanes. The street is working fine for everyone.

Check out a recent video we did on the Jarvis Street bike lanes called What is wrong with this Bike Lane?

The biggest concern against the Jarvis Street bike lane prior to implementation was significant delays in travel times for motor vehicles. A staff report released in April shows that these delays have not materialized. Updated traffic counts (see page 17) from the City of Toronto showed that following the installation of bike lanes on Jarvis Street, motor vehicle volumes remained the same while cycling volumes tripled. It makes no sense to remove a bike lane from a street that works for all road users. This is wasteful spending at City Hall. Removing the bike lanes and re-installing the fifth centre lane will cost over a quarter million dollars. In fact, Mayor Ford was asked during the 2010 election if he would remove the Jarvis bike lanes if elected.  His answer was no because it would be a waste of money.

It's time Toronto cyclists stand up to defend our public safety. Together, we can win this.

Here's how:

1. Call and E-mail Rob Ford: 416-397-FORD/mayor_ford@toronto.ca

2. Call and E-mail your local Councillor

3. Join our Save Jarvis! Team by contacting us at jarvis@bikeunion.to. We're looking for volunteers who can flyer the bike lane on week day mornings, gather testimonials, pictures, video and connect with cyclists who use the bike lane.

We need you to reach out to your network and help the bike union keep the flood waters rising. Share with every electronic friend until we beat this bad idea.
