Register/Report/Check

Report theft

Have you ever had your bike stolen? Do you know anyone who has? If you live in Toronto, chances are you know a victim of bike theft. To combat bike theft, we’re launching the Register/Report/Check campaign! The solution to reducing bike theft is to collapse the market for stolen bikes, making it harder for thieves to re-sell stolen bikes, and easier for the police to return stolen bikes to their owners. This requires three elements:

1. REGISTER your bike

2. REPORT theft when it occurs

3. CHECK the stolen status of used bikes

Many don't register their bikes because they don't see the point. Even fewer people report the theft when it occurs. And since so few bikes are registered, stolen bikes change hands easily because people rarely check to see if the bikes are stolen. Through our apathy we end up creating a healthy market for stolen bikes! Continue reading...

Richmond & Adelaide Update

Vancouver bike lane

Separated bike lanes in Vancouver

Last week the City's Public Works and Infrastructure Committee voted to proceed with an Environmental Assessment (EA) for protected bike lanes in the Richmond/Adelaide corridor. The EA will determine the best route and design options for the protected bike lanes. City staff will also explore ways to have the protected bike lanes connect to existing bikeways west of Bathurst Street and east of Sherbourne Street. The bike union's action alert generating a response from over 200 people. A big thanks to everyone who e-mailed their support to move this forward!

In 2001, the City's official bike plan, Shifting Gears, identified Richmond and Adelaide Streets as suitable for protected bike lanes. At that time, the Plan noted that approximately 15,000 cyclists travelled to and from downtown on weekdays. Since then, the number of cyclists travelling to and from the downtown core has more than doubled. Separated bicycle lanes in the Richmond-Adelaide corridor will significantly improve bicycle safety and access to the many employment, residential, cultural and entertainment destinations in Toronto's downtown core. This proposed east-west bikeway will become an integral part of the City's emerging downtown separated bikeway network. We will continue to provide updates on the EA process and opportunities for public consultation over the next year. Check out our resource page to learn more about protected bike lanes.

Refer-a-Rider Recap
